Both male and female: Autosomal (At)-DNA in a cell nucleus (from both parents to their children going back in time).
Male only: Y-DNA (ergo fathers to sons, going back in time).
Female only: Mitochondrial (Mt)-DNA) (ergo mothers to daughters, going back in time). Sons also inherit Mt-DNA from their mothers, but do not pass it on to children.
Both male and female: X-DNA testing. Rarely done solo. Tracks maternal lines.
