NorthSky Ranch Morgans is located near Ross, North Dakota, nestled in the rolling hills, coulees, and badland ruggedness that not only tests horses but makes horses. With many pastures not being entirely vehicle accessible, horses play an important part in successful livestock husbandry. Durable and sound-minded horses are needed for the long days of rounding up cattle, pushing them miles to their next destination or back to the corrals. Horses that are comfortable and surefooted navigating tricky terrain full of different obstacles. Horses who aren't afraid of getting in tight spots or of pursuing the cow (or bull) that decides to take a dive off the edge of a bluff. Who can transition from the high pressure job of keeping cows from breaking to the quiet, delicate work of sorting, or to the relaxing trail ride we all crave from time to time. Durability and sound-mindedness are two traits that make or break a ranch horse, and the two top traits I choose to pursue in my own horses. Pursue both in breeding and environment by choosing mares and stallions that are both proven under saddle to have those traits, and by growing them as foals in an environment that promotes proper bone, muscle, and mind development.
While I did press the pause button on breeding in order to give my young stock time to grow up, my goal is to focus first and foremost on raising quality Morgans that fully embody the breed's origin. Figure, the founding sire of the Morgan breed, was a horse that could do anything. He could work all day in the fields before packing the family into town. He could outwalk, out trot, outrun, and outpull the other horses of his time. They made ideal ranch horses out west due to their tough nature, good disposition, and their ability to be the "jack of all trades". Some historic Quarter Horse operations (one being the King Ranch) stood Morgan stallions or crossed Morgan mares with Quarter Horse stallions in the early 1900s during the development of the Quarter Horse breed. These western working lines of Morgans are the foundation of my own program, the horses themselves carry decades of western working lineage through programs such as the Jackson Morgan Ranch carrying the Mortana prefix and through the TruWest program. Both programs are renown for their strong ties to the working ranch life with combined experience of 150 years, and for raising Morgans that are still carrying on that ranching legacy today.Â
