Bee Apps

I'm thrilled to introduce two new apps that I’ve developed, blending my passion for data-driven beekeeping with cutting-edge AI tools. These apps started as intricate Excel models—tools I’ve meticulously crafted to simplify complex calculations and streamline decision-making processes for northern beekeepers like us.

But I didn’t stop there. Leveraging AI platforms, I transformed these spreadsheets into intuitive, user-friendly apps. Despite not having programmed since my university days, these tools demonstrate how accessible technology can empower individuals to create impactful solutions. The logic behind each app mirrors the models I’ve built, ensuring the same rigor and reliability, now with even greater ease of use.

Explore these tools and see how they can support your beekeeping journey in the unique conditions of northern climates. Whether you're optimizing your hive management or analyzing environmental data, these apps are here to make your work smarter, not harder.

My goal is to introduce the principles of hive winter thermodynamics. I will include honey bee metabolism (consumption of honey) used to generate heat while producing vapour water and CO2 as byproducts. As beekeepers there are many things we can do to ensure our bees enter winter with what they need to easily overwinter. I will review the key drivers of ventilation, heat transfer, thermal mass, moisture management and a few others. My goal is to create visual tools such as calculators with charts where the users can "play" with different variable to understand what levers can be used to improve our wintering successes.

Over the years, I have built myself a model to attempt to link all of the inputs that go into successfully overwintering our bees. Here are some of  my technical presentations that I will be using.
