During WWII the estate around Duddingston House was used by the army.
After the war the Nissen huts were used as emergency accommodation for about 400 families. Intended as a temporary measure, the camp remained in use for many years.
These newspaper articles document the many issues the residents faced.

1946 - 1950. An enthusiastic start, but problems soon become apparent.
1950 - 1951. Protest parades against conditions.
1951 - 1958. The 'temporary' housing solution has gone on longer than intended, before finally being brought to an end.
