National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP)
Open to first and second year graduate students (graduate students are limited to only one application to the GRFP).
Deadline: Late October– Chemistry, Geosciences, Mathematical Sciences, Physics and Astronomy
National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship Program (NDSEG)
Open to any graduate student who has at least three remaining years in their graduate program.
Deadline: Early December
Open to PhD students who are U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and U.S. permanent residents, as well as individuals granted deferred action status under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program.
Deadline: December
Hertz Foundation Graduate Fellowship
Open to U.S. citizens or permanent residents applying to or enrolled in the first year of PhD programs in physical and biological sciences, mathematics and engineering.
Deadline: late October
Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship
Open to first-year doctoral students and undergraduate seniors in the physical, engineering, computer, mathematical or life sciences.
Deadline: Mid-January
The Science, Mathematics, And Research for Transformation Scholarship (SMART) for Service Program
Open to citizens of the U.S., Australia, Canada, New Zealand or the U.K. pursuing graduate studies in an array of STEM disciplines, including physics. Applicants must be willing to accept post-graduate employment with the Department of Defense and may be required to obtain a security clearance.
Deadline: Early December
Graduate Fellowships for STEM Diversity
Open to any qualified U.S. citizen who has the ability to pursue graduate work at a GFSD university partners. Applicants at any stage of their graduate program may apply, as long as they will be available to accept two summers of paid internship.
Deadline: December
Open to citizens or legal permanent residents of Australia, India, Japan, or the United States. If applicants are currently enrolled in a Master’s or PhD program, they may apply if they will be enrolled in a qualified academic program during their time as a Fellow.

P.D. Soros Fellowship for New Americans
Open to U.S. citizens by birth or adoption, naturalized citizens, green card holders, refugees and asylees, or people who graduated high school and college in the U.S. To be eligible, your birth parents must have both been born outside of the U.S. as non-U.S. citizens, and both parents must not have been eligible for U.S. citizenship at the time of their births.
Deadline: late October
Open to U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents. Participation is targeted to those who belong to under-represented groups, specifically American Indian/Native, African American/Black, Hispanic American/Latino. Must contractually agree to intern for two summers with sponsoring GEM Employer, beginning the summer after sponsorship.

Scholarship opportunities:
The Barry Goldwater Scholarship
Open to full-time matriculated sophomores or juniors pursuing a degree at an accredited 2- or 4-year institution of higher education during the 2022-2023 academic year who intends to pursue a research career in a natural science, mathematics or engineering.
Deadline: Varies
Open to U.S.-based students of color entering an undergraduate STEM program, specifically Black, LatinX and other racially underrepresented students interested in the STEM field (African-American, Hispanic, Native/Indigenous; Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders; Alaskan natives). Students must be of sophomore or junior standing in secondary school level or higher.
Deadline: April
Open to Girl Up participants (event attendee, Club member, program participant, etc.) who are enrolled in a 2-year, 4-year, or technical college by time of funds disbursement (high school seniors can apply!).
