This is a three-part workshop series designed to help students prepare their written statements for their graduate school applications. We will present on what to include and how to format personal, diversity, and research statements and then provide the space for feedback. During the workshops, graduate students can help with brainstorming prior experiences you should write about or offer tips for creating a narrative structure that frames those experiences.
Overview of the series:
Session 1: Dr. Jahla Osborne, a Postdoctoral Fellow at Northeastern, will lead you through how to write a personal statement. You'll leave this session knowing what details about you and from your previous experiences are relevant for your personal statement and how to structure this information.
Session 2: Current PhD students will guide you through examples of personal statements that helped them gain admission to Psychology PhD programs. We will also give tips for outlining the narrative in your personal statement, a crucial component of introducing yourself to potential advisors and demonstrating you are a good fit to work with them. We’ll also cover how to write research and diversity statements if that is of interest.
Session 3: This is a feedback session where you will swap statement drafts with others in attendance and receive constructive peer feedback on your statement. You are invited to bring your statement draft regardless of what stage of writing you are at with it.
Office Hours: If you're looking for more personalized feedback on your statements or have questions not answered during the workshops, we are also hosting two office hours after the workshops conclude.
Workshop Resources:
Worksheet: To facilitate the flow of ideas and help perfect the narrative structure of your statements, we will provide a worksheet and give you time to fill it out throughout the series.
PhD Students: Who better to ask for tips and feedback than those who have successfully been through the application process? Like with all our programs, it's the GSMP exec board hosting this series and all of us are current Psychology PhD students. We invite you to pick our brains about PhD programs and how to be a successful applicant. We will be at each session and office hours.
These sessions will be held on Thursdays at 5:30-7pm in Nightingale Hall.

Students and post-baccs requesting one-on-one mentoring with a current Psychology PhD student will have the opportunity to receive general or personalized guidance from their assigned mentor. Mentors can provide support and advice as mentees gain experiences in preparation for graduate school, assist with applying to graduate school, and answer any questions along the way. Mentees are encouraged to meet with their mentors more than once and as needed throughout their undergraduate experience and while applying to graduate school. Mentor-mentee pairings are made based on research interests, shared background, and desired experiences during graduate school.
One-on-one mentoring pairings will be assigned early in the spring semester. We will send out the mentoring sign-up form via email. Email addresses that will receive this message will be collected from the attendees of the first few presentations of the semester, those who fill out the form via the Psychology and BNS Canvas page announcements, and anyone who emails the GSMP requesting the form.
You may also sign up at any time. The form is available here (and at the bottom of the page) for year-round accessibility: Mentoring Sign-up Form.
Mentoring pairings take a few weeks to determine before being announced via email to introduce the mentor-mentee pairs.
Estimated Mentor-Mentee Pairing 2026 Release Date: TBD for Spring 2026
This series of presentations in the spring offer the opportunity to connect with current PhD students in the Department of Psychology at Northeastern who will present on a variety of topics related to graduate school and the application process. The presentations will cover topics including different graduate degrees in psychology, the application process, and what to expect in graduate school. We encourage students at any stage during their undergrad career and anyone in a post-bacc position to join us for any or all of the presentations. It's never too early to begin thinking about graduate school and how to prepare for it!
