Many answers to the FAQs can be found on this website or are discussed during the presentation series. Questions that are more specific to your background or application, should be directed to your mentor or can be emailed to the GSMP.
When and how can I sign up for the mentoring program?
The sign up form is typically released via email near the beginning to middle of the spring semester. We collect emails from the attendees of the first few presentations of the semester and from anyone who emails us separately requesting the form. The mentoring sign up form is also linked in the Schedule tab for year-round accessibility. Mentorship pairings take a few weeks to determine before being announced via email to introduce the mentor-mentee pairs.
What if I can't attend the presentations in-person or virtually?
Although we prefer students to attend the presentations live, whether that be in-person or virtually, we understand that is not always possible due to scheduling conflicts or unforeseen circumstances. Please email the GSMP with specific questions related to the topic of the presentation or for an overview of what was covered during the presentation you were unable to attend.
Can someone review my application materials?
Yes! We are happy to help year-round, especially when application season rolls around in the fall. There are three ways to get feedback on your application materials:
a) The one-on-one mentoring program is the best resource for getting feedback on your applications. Perhaps of greatest importance to applicants, most mentors are willing to review and provide comments on written statements to get them into the best shape possible.
b) Additionally, beginning in 2024, the GSMP will be instituting a new workshop in the fall to help with writing and editing personal and diversity/history statements. During the workshop, we will present on what to include in those statements and then provide time for you to write and/or edit your statements. Graduate students at the workshop can help with anything from brainstorming experiences you should write about to editing a draft to ensure a narrative structure that frames those experiences. Details about the workshop can be found in the Schedule tab.
c) If neither of the previous options fit your timeline, you can also email the GSMP and we can try to find a willing graduate student to help out.
How can I regularly get communication from the GSMP?
The GSMP has a mailing list you can join at the bottom of the page. Please use a non-Northeastern email address, such as a Gmail, because you will be added to a Google Group, which sometimes excludes Northeastern email address from our communications. Using the mailing list, we will send out regular reminders for the spring presentations, release the mentoring sign up form, and announce program updates.
