Northeastern University's Psychology Graduate School Mentoring Program (GSMP)
Northeastern University's Psychology Graduate School Mentoring Program (GSMP)
Welcome to the official website of Northeastern's Psychology GSMP!
The Graduate School Mentoring Program (GSMP) aims to offer Northeastern University undergraduate students resources to understand what graduate school in psychology entails as well as prepare for and apply to psychology graduate school. As graduate students ourselves, the graduate members of the GSMP are passionate about helping undergraduates achieve their future education goals. We did not go through the process of preparing for and applying to graduate school alone - we learned from others' mentorship and guidance. For example, our mentors helped us understand the best ways to allocate our time in college, such as toward research experiences, and how to frame ourselves as competitive applicants for PhD programs in our personal statements. This is what we strive to emulate with the GSMP. Whatever stage you are at in deciding your path to graduate school and beyond, the GSMP is here to help!
A unique quality of being a Psychology or Behavioral Neuroscience major is that you gain a lot of knowledge and skills through your degree! Your knowledge and skills will be honed during graduate school to train you for a career in psychology. When it comes to preparing materials for your graduate school applications, it is important to showcase the value of your degree and any related experiences, such as research or clinical work. Undergraduate and graduate psychology-related classes, research, and work experiences teach lots of skills that are transferable across fields and jobs that will impress graduate programs and employers. They include:
analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
quantitative skills
collaborative, interpersonal, and communication skills
cultural competence
research methodology
psychological knowledge
We aim to help you demonstrate in your applications your versatility as a psychology trainee ready to embark on your graduate school journey. We can offer advice on what experiences to seek out that adequately prepare you to pursue a graduate degree and position you as a competitive candidate, and we can provide guidance on how to promote your preparedness for graduate school in your applications. Continue down the page to see exactly how we can help!
The GSMP offers multiple resources on your journey to graduate school, including informative online sources, live information sessions, and hands-on help. The content of these resources span from deciding whether graduate school is right for you and what degree program you should pursue to how to navigate the application process. Take time to explore the different components of the GSMP to decide whether some or all will help you reach your graduate school goals!
The GSMP hosts a presentation series each spring semester covering various topics related to the graduate school experience and applying to graduate programs.
The presentation series is designed to share information about graduate school and the application process, touching on information that is not always easily accessible to undergraduates. These topics include the differences between graduate degree programs, life as a graduate student, reasons for taking a gap year, and information and tips for graduate school applications and interviews. The last presentation in the series is always a Q&A session with a graduate student panel. This is a great opportunity to ask current graduate students any of your burning questions and hear others' questions!
Presentation topics and dates are listed in the Schedule tab on this website.
The GSMP has a one-on-one mentoring program in which participating Northeastern undergraduates are paired with a current Northeastern Psychology PhD student.
All Northeastern Psychology and Behavioral Neuroscience (BNS) undergraduates are eligible to participate in the mentoring program. Mentor-mentee pairs will be determined based on the match between mentor's and mentee's graduate school interests and goals. This program is an opportunity for mentees to have contact with someone who has successfully been through the application process and is currently participating in graduate school. Graduate students can offer great insight into undergraduates' questions and guide them through thinking about and applying to graduate school. Mentors can talk through career paths, how to get involved in research, review application materials, etc. Current PhD students are also great resources for revealing hidden academia and providing tips that helped them reach graduate school. Mentees are typically the drivers in the mentorship pair, meaning undergraduates can shape their mentorship experience however is most useful to them.
The mentoring program sign-up form is linked in the Schedule tab and at the bottom of this page.
To accompany what you learn from the presentation series and one-on-one mentoring, we host workshops for beginning and editing your written statements for your graduate school applications. These workshops provide details on the structure and content of a personal statement and give you time to write and receive feedback from current Psychology PhD students. You will also receive some information on diversity and research statements, as some schools may require these as part of your application.
More information about the workshops and the dates of them can be found in the Schedule tab on this website.
**You do not have to participate in both the presentation series and mentoring program. These are separate programs.
This website lists useful tips and resources to help you at any point along your journey to graduate school.
We provide materials covering many topics, including how to get involved in research, how to apply and make the most of a post-bacc position (typically post-graduate research jobs), information on the graduate school application and interview process, and some information for students interested in pursuing a Clinical Psychology degree. There is also a Hands-on Help opportunity to assist in preparing your application materials for post-bacc positions and graduate school. These materials may include cover letters, CV, resume, and personal statements.
Resources mentioned during the presentation series as well as additional resources to help in achieving your graduate school goals are listed in the Resources tab on this website.
