Letter from the Editors
Hello friends,
A huge thank you to everyone who submitted to NORTH this year, and to those who bought sweaters and came to soup day. Without you, there would be no soup, sweaters or journal, so we really appreciate your participation!
Ever since we were in first year, NORTH has always been there for us, reminding us how talented the people in this program are. In an environment in which we must complete assignment after assignment, it is hard to fit in time to be creative. Throughout the last four years, NORTH has been there to remind us that, even during the most stressful times, art will be there for you.
We think that NORTH is such an essential part of this program because nothing is more human than the act of creation. From the Epic of Gilgamesh to Midnight’s Children, it is clear that we have been building worlds for thousands of years. What makes NORTH so great is that it gives everyone the opportunity to express their humanity in the same way as the authors we read, providing our own little time capsule of humanity from the 21st century. Despite the fact that it feels as if we are on a different planet from the one who wrote the Epic of Gilgamesh, something that is clear from just reading the poem is that you are just as much of a human as they are. The human condition connects everyone who has ever lived, ever created, or ever loved, and this art from you all is proof of that connection.
Also, to our fellow editors, the effort and care that you all have put into this journal has shown what true Humanities students you are. Without you, we quite literally could not have done this, so thank you endlessly for all of your help. Thank you for making sure that art stays important! We can't wait to see what you do next year.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to this journal, and we hope that you all enjoy.
Love you all,
Kaitlyn Hughes and Serena Hartel
