We have chosen to use the term nontraditional grading (NTG) to be an umbrella for the many types of alternate grading: from self- or peer-assessment, to labor-based contracts, to ungrading, to specifications, and all the remixes of the systems. The scholarly research and practical applications of NTG are emerging fields, and we expect that the terms will continue to change as more and more faculty adopt similar practices.
While our experiences have been using NTG in composition classrooms, there is no limit to the usefulness of progressive assessment practices of student learning.
