An innovative solo exhibition by British artist Luciana Haill bringing together contemporary artistic approaches and modern scientific experiments to address pioneers in neuroscience with Victorian engineering & lost heritage.

Through the combination of real-time brainwave monitoring, flickering lights that entrain altered states, nostalgic local imagery projected in layered feedback and heritage augmented reality, the artist works as a nightclub VJ and augur with solo participants who keep their eyes closed whilst she crafts them a bespoke solo projection of their mind

Each Friday and Saturday from October 6 - 29, from 5 until 9pm inside St Andrews Mews, Hastings, TN34 1SJ (extended by appointment until November 11, 2023)

A guided heritage walk with the artist and the public took place on Sunday October 22nd using her smartphone artwork 'Apparitions' app. Starting from The Royal Victoria Hotel on St Leonards' sea front the group viewed The Pier of St Leonards last seen in 1951 and then walked a mile to Hastings town centre so see the Memorial Clocktower demolished in 1973.

Apparitions latest 'geotagged' function triggers life sized creations of St Leonards Pier and The Memorial Clocktower with Prince Albert back in place when standing on their original sites using augmented reality viewed in mobile devices. Download the Apparitions free app and instructions here

The show is called 'No Hammer Needed' as the art works do not hang or fix to any wall, they are digital, augmented, and inside your mind. It was open to the public each Friday and Saturday evenings from 5-9pm. The art experience involving flickering stroboscopic white lights is only suitable for adults who had read over a consent form and do not have migraines or photosensitive epilepsy.

Over 5 weeks this evolved from an analytical aesthetic into a slower, more intuitive, bespoke session with the artist involving her VJ skills and experiences, melting nostalgia from locally sourced  vintage postcards into live brainwave recordings made from the guests who booked. There were also 3 guest interventions with Pyramid of Dwarves, Bren Hax and Jason Williams which were experimental sessions to test new ideas.

"After my experience, I felt my emotions lift and I no longer felt fatigued. The experience was uplifting with a warm tingle. There were some hallucinogenic experiences and I also travelled ‘backwards’ and found myself in memory zones I had not thought about for a while. I feel refreshed and rebooted" -
