Objective: The goal of this project was to create a thematic map showing the borders and characteristics of the ancient kingdom of Ugarit. The creation of this map required original research into the names and locations of ancient cities, trading routes, and neighboring empires. By highlighting the kingdom's geography and interactions with the outside world, I placed Ugarit's story in the larger context of the ancient near east.

Methodology: I carefully designed this map by utilizing concepts in cartography such as creating an effective visual hierarchy, having good contrast between map elements, choosing appropriate colors and texts, and thoughtful creation and placement of symbols. Examples of cartographic principles in this map can be found in the creation of different dashed lines and textured symbols to highlight different thematic elements, the use of knock-out boxes to improve text legibility, and the use of inset maps and directional symbols to provide geographical context for the location of Ugarit.
