Staff Recommendations:
Window patterns and configurations are linked to a building's period of construction and style. Since all of the components and details of a window essential to defining the construction period and style, the pattern and configuration of proposed replacement windows should be historically appropriate to the building.
The applicant is requesting retention of inappropriate windows installed in deviation of a Certificate of Appropriateness. The CofA and owner/contractor contract both state that the window is to be recessed into the exterior wall. The windows were installed flush with the exterior trim and with a wide infill trim. However, the new windows are more appropriate for the period and style of the building than the jalousie windows they replaced. For this reason, Staff recommends approval with the proviso that the full window screens are removed.
Recommendation: Approval with the proviso that the screens are removed.
