Description: Request to remove one non-original chimney at the rear of a Contributing rated, one-story, single-family residential building. 

Staff Recommendations:

The Guidelines require a Commission appeal for the removal of any chimneys at Contributing rated buildings and does not make a distinction between historic and non-historic chimneys. However, based on the location, type of brick, and lack of ornamentation, Staff agrees with the applicant that the chimney at the rear of the building is not original. The historic chimneys are made of red brick that show signs of weathering and repointing. The historic chimneys that are most intact are also quite decorative, which matches the style of the house. The non-historic chimney at the rear is made up of lighter red brick, that appears to be machine cut, and lacks weathering and repointing. It is also quite plain for the building. As such, Staff is not opposed to the removal of the rear chimney. 

Recommendation: No objection
