HDLC Guidelines:
Section 5, Page 10 of the Guidelines for Roofing.
Staff Recommendation:
Roof mounted solar at highly visible roof slope: No objection.
Staff Recommendations:
Constructed in ca. 1920, 925 Vallette Street is a one-story frame residential building with limited Craftsman detailing. In 2016, a permit application was submitted for solar installation at the left-side roof slope of the building. This application was reviewed and denied by the HDLC NO Commission due to overall visibility. Since 2016, the HDLC guidelines for roof-mounted solar equipment have been revised to be more inclusive of configuration and overall location. The currently proposed configuration is very similar to the previously denied layout.
Due to smaller surrounding buildings and a large parking lot at the corner of Newton and Vallette Streets, the left-side roof slope of 925 Vallette is highly visible. However, 925 Vallette is in the middle of the block and not located at a corner. Although previously denied, the proposed configuration now fits within the HDLC Guidelines. Staff has no objection to the installation of the solar array at the left-side roof slope. Staff will work with the applicant to ensure that the final configuration meets all guidelines.
