The optical properties of 2D semiconductors are strongly influenced by excitons and their interactions with the surrounding environment. Changes in carrier populations, defects and interlayer coupling can modify how these excitations form, transfer and emit light.
Strain engineering provides a means of tuning electronic structure and interlayer interactions through mechanical deformation. Ferroelectric polarization offers complementary electrical control of excitonic emission. Together, these approaches create opportunities for tunable light-emitting structures, optical memory and other optoelectronic device concepts.
Our research investigates how strain, pressure and ferroelectric polarization control optical responses in 2D semiconductors and van der Waals heterostructures. We study the relationships between interlayer coupling, charge and energy transfer, and excitonic emission. By combining heterostructure fabrication with Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopy, we connect material and interface changes with optical behavior and explore approaches to spatially controlled and electrically reconfigurable emission.
Exciton research connects semiconductor materials with photonics, optical sensing, and emerging quantum technologies. Optical spectroscopy, instrumentation, and quantitative analysis support the translation of fundamental light–matter interactions into device concepts, while also serving broader needs in semiconductor characterization and optical metrology.
