About
Founded in August 2023 with the goal to make Northern the greenest in the GLIAC, Green Athletics is a student-driven working group consisting of student-athletes, coaches, and other administrators striving to create and promote sustainable changes within NMU's Athletic Department.
Through collaboration and communication with SHINE, NMU Athletics, EcoReps, and other campus entities, Green Athletics hopes to create long-lasting change throughout NMU, the surrounding Marquette community, and the world beyond. Green Athletics serves as a sustainability spokesperson for NMU Athletics, and helps contribute to the growing number of sustainability initiatives throughout NMU.
The purpose of this portfolio is to exhibit all of the background research that was conducted prior to the formation of Green Athletics, and the numerous projects and events that have been completed since the group’s initial establishment. It is our hope that other universities and athletic departments will utilize this portfolio as a template for their own institution to replicate these same efforts in the future.
Our team consists of over 30+ student-athletes and 6+ administrators committed to sharing and representing the mission and work of Green Athletics. We represent numerous athletic teams at NMU and various aspects of NMU's administration and athletic department.

After realizing the need for a student-athlete sustainability group within NMU Athletics, NMU Women's Basketball alum Makaylee Kuhn founded Green Athletics in the Fall of 2023. While at NMU, she completed a bachelor's degree in environmental science and a minor in sustainability, and also created this portfolio through her Master's of Interdisciplinary Studies degree. It is Makaylee's hope that Green Athletics will continue to grow and be supported by NMU and NMU Athletics for years to come. She hopes that other schools will use Green Athletics as a template to create their own sustainability program within their athletic department and continue similar work and research in the future.
