For this assignment we were paired in groups of two, and asked to explore technology in two different locations. The location I chose to research is Armenia. I chose Armenia because it's always been a place I wanted to visit.
General Population
According to Worldometer the current population of Armenia is 2,777,970, a 0.09% decline from 2022. More than 98% of the total population is ethically Armenian; some minority groups include Yezidis, Russians, Ukranians, and Greeks.
Languages Spoken: The most common Armenian language is the Eastern Armenian language. Other foreign languages used in Armenia are Russian and English.
Climate
Armenia is a sunny country with four seasons. The Winter and summer is more severe and the Spring and Fall is much milder and shorter. While visiting Armenia it’s recommended to wear cool cottons and linens. Although the temperature in Armenia can reach very hot temperatures, visitors should research attire for religious attractions.
Technology Usage/ Culture
There were 2.18 million internet users in Armenia in early 2023 and a total of 1.85 million social media users which equals 66.6 percent of the total population. Armenia now has a growing information and communications technology sector. Many International Companies are seeking Armenians that specialize in software development, industrial computing, and electronics. The Foundation of Armenian Science and Technology (FAST) has a goal to transform Armenia into a science driven country by 2041.
Digital Divide
Armenia doesn't have much of a digital divide; internet access is widespread in Armenia’s capital Yerevan, and is expanding throughout the country. The internet reliability and speed has improved in recent years. There are also public WIFI hotspots in other major cities, but not as many as Yeravan. The internet service is affordable in Armenia and during the COVID-19 pandemic major service providers offered unbilled access to online educational and government resources including Skype and Zoom.
Lessons Learned
The most shocking thing I learned while researching Armenia is that Armenians drink alcohol in small consumptions. They feel it effects the heart state and metabolism so they drink occasionally. Overall this assignment taught me its best to research and have a travel plan prior to traveling to Armenia.
