Day 1: Cloud Concepts & Architecture
Task 1 (Netflix Case Study): Netflix uses AWS for backend operations alongside local caching servers (OCAs) inside ISP data centres. This cloud setup avoids the massive costs and slowness of building private data centres while providing global scaling and malware protection.
Task 2 (Service Models):
IaaS: Renting raw servers/storage (e.g., hosting core websites without hardware).
PaaS: Developer environments for building tools safely.
SaaS: Fully managed web apps used directly in a browser.
Task 3 (Deployment Models):
Public: Scalable and elastic, but relies on vendor control.
Private: High control and privacy, but high upkeep costs.
Hybrid: Combines public flexibility with private security.
Community: Shared infrastructure between specific organizations.
Day 2: UK Data Legislation & Security
Task 1 (Computer Misuse Act 1990): Covers unauthorized access (hacking), access with intent to commit further crimes (blackmail/theft), and deliberate or reckless system impairment.
Task 2 (Police & Justice Act 2006): Explicitly criminalized DDoS attacks, added penalties for reckless system impairment, and increased overall sentence severity.
Task 3 (Data Rights & Employee Data): Employers can store standard data (name, work history) under DPA 2018, but sensitive data (race, biometrics, union status) requires explicit consent.
Task 4 (Legislation Summary): Mapped UK acts to workplace scenarios—covering software licensing (Copyright Act), workstation breaks (DSE Regs), and proper data handling (UK GDPR).
Day 3 Labs (Tasks 1–4): Configured core Microsoft Azure data storage services, establishing key cloud storage structures and setting up security parameters under tutor guidance.
Day 4 Lab 6 (Task 1): Built and tested cloud data integration pipelines, connecting storage resources to analytical tools to process sample datasets efficiently.
