For this final project, we had 4 main deliverables:
These were the criteria that I distilled and designed to:
My design started with calculations for what kind of displacement and pinch was needed. Playing around with distance, and material gave me many different outcomes.
I opted for a force from 75% of the primary pinch in a female's left hand. From that, I could start designing.
Now, I had a general idea for a button, but how to integrate it into the case? I watched a teardown video of the current Airpod's case and noted the crucial fact that there was not much space in the Airpod. To implement a button with minimal changes to the internal parts, I needed to build outwards a little.
Also important was that I wanted to build hardstops in all directions for the button. Modifying the case parts and the air pod sockets, I was able to implement physical stops.
