"A person's a person, no matter how small." - Dr. Seuss
I believe in treating all people with respect. This extends to promoting respect for and between students, as well as between students and staff.
I believe in teaching cross-curricular lessons.
I believe in meeting students where they are at, and helping them grow from there.
I believe in allowing students to have choices in their learning. I tell my students that art class is the one class that is truly about YOU, your thoughts, your life. Allowing students to have choices creates ownership and investment in their learning and a deeper curiosity during the creative process. I have promoted this through art assignments that allow for a wide range of approaches both subject wise and materially, as well as through genius hour.
I believe in knowing my students. This is sometimes difficult as a specials teacher when you see the entire school, but I make a conscious effort to get to know something about every student throughout the year, and know all the students' names. Getting to know the students is the gateway to helping them grow.
I believe in students being responsible for their own learning, and tracking their own progress.
I believe in positivity, positive reinforcement, and logical consequences. I use restorative practices when applicable, because this is the best way for students to grow in conflict management and social skills they need in life outside the classroom.
