Coping with Death
Healthcare workers have to deal with death of patients to be able to keep doing their job. So it’s very important that healthcare workers learn about the stages of grief and how to deal with this difficult situation. It’s very stressful to go through an experience like this and being a healthcare worker just adds on to the stress. Being able to manage my emotions will help my job performance to be better for future patients. The stress response I plan to use when coping with death is to stay composed and calm, move forward and work on another patient. If I stay stuck on a patient’s death, I won’t be able to put my best effort for other patients. Not only am I not helping myself by staying sad, but I am not helping my patients that need the care they deserve. After dealing with a death at work, recovering won’t be easy. The environment at work might change with a patient being gone. But to recover I have to accept that it was going to happen. Death happens to everybody and no one can prevent it.
