Newton South
High School

The City of Newton and Newton Public Schools are working this summer to improve the safety of walking and biking to school in light of COVID. Keep visiting this page, which will be updated as these improvements are implemented.

Bike Routes

This summer Newton Safe Routes, Green Newton School Connections, and Bike Newton crowd-sourced bike routes to secondary schools.

Here are some suggested routes to Newton South in Ride with GPS. We recommend that your student test these and find what works best for them.

Bike Parking

Newton South has bike parking throughout the campus. The covered bike rack is on the west side of the building.

Remember to ALWAYS lock your bike.

Bus

Newton South is served by both yellow school buses and the 52 MBTA bus.

Yellow School Bus. Check out bus routes and schedule for South and an interactive map of NPS bus stops by school. Visit the NPS School Transportation webpage for more information.

METCO students will find their bus stops and additional information here.

MBTA. The 52 bus has a few stops within easy walking distance of Newton South.

Student Charlie Card. Students can also pick up a (free) student Charlie Card that allows them to ride the MBTA at a reduced rate. Normally the card is available at your student's House Office and the NPS Transportation Office at the Ed Center.

Remote Drop-Off/Pick-Up

We encourage students to walk, bike or take the bus to school. If you must drive, please find an area to drop off and pick up away from the school to avoid getting caught in school traffic and to make it safer for everyone. This also prioritizes access for those students who do need to be driven. Work with your family to find a location that works for you.

Newton South Traffic Council Trial

At the June 25, 2020 meeting, the Newton Traffic Council voted to allow trial actions/changes in the vicinity of any school in Newton. These temporary trials may include modifications to the traffic flow, parking regulations, turning restrictions, and/or pavement markings. The purpose and goal for these trial actions is to improve safety, encourage more walking and bicycling to school, and reduce congestion around schools during pick-up and drop-off time periods. These changes are temporary in nature and would revert to the previous conditions unless Traffic Council subsequently votes to make these changes permanent.

Temporary Traffic and Parking Regulations

  • Legal contra-flow bike lane on Hagen Road, between Sheldon Road and Olde Field Road

  • Restrict on-street parking on south side of Brandeis Road, from Adeline Road going east to NSHS

See letter and map detailing changes.
