Newton North
High School

The City of Newton and Newton Public Schools are working this summer to improve the safety of walking and biking to school in light of COVID. Keep visiting this page, which will be updated as these improvements are implemented.

Bike Routes

This summer Newton Safe Routes, Green Newton School Connections, and Bike Newton crowd-sourced bike routes to secondary schools.

Here are some suggested routes to Newton North in Ride with GPS. We recommend that your student test these and find what works best for them.

Bike Parking

Newton North has bike parking at the front of the school on Tiger Drive, at the Walnut parking lot, near the auditorium, and near the entrance to the track off Elm Rd. The covered bike rack is by the track.

Remember to ALWAYS lock your bike.

Bus

Newton North is served by both yellow school buses and MBTA buses.

Yellow School Bus. Check out bus routes and schedule for North and an interactive map of NPS bus stops by school. Visit the NPS School Transportation webpage for more information.

METCO students will find their bus stops and additional information here.

MBTA

  • Bus 59 - Walnut and Mill

  • Bus 553, 554 - Washington and Lowell Ave

  • Bus 556 - Washington and Walnut

Note that the 556 and 554 routes are currently suspended.

Student Charlie Card. Students can pick up a (free) student Charlie Card that allows them to ride the MBTA at a reduced rate. Normally the card is available at your House office and the NPS Transportation Office at the Ed Center. Details of how they will be distributed will be forthcoming. More information here.

Temporary Traffic and
Parking Regulations

  • Restrict traffic on Elm Road to school buses, school staff, residents of Elm Road, and bicyclists.

  • Shift Tiger Permit Parking off of Lowell Street between Hull Street and Elm Road, and move this Tiger Permit Parking to Austin Street municipal parking lot.

  • Create a northbound pick-up/drop-off zone on Lowell Ave between Hull Street and Bolton Road.

  • Shift the Double-Yellow Center Line on Lowell Ave 7 ft to the east, just north of Bolton Road.

  • Create a southbound pick-up/drop-off zone on Lowell Ave between Bolton Road and Elm Road

Remote Drop-Off/Pick-Up

We encourage students to walk, bike or take the bus to school. If you must drive, please find an area to drop off and pick up away from the school to avoid getting caught in school traffic and to make it safer for everyone. This also prioritizes access for those students who do need to be driven. Work with your family to find a location that works for you.

Newton North Traffic Council Trial

At the June 25, 2020 meeting, the Newton Traffic Council voted to allow trial actions/changes in the vicinity of any school in Newton.

These temporary trials include modifications to the traffic flow, parking regulations, turning restrictions, and/or pavement markings. The purpose and goal for these trial actions is to improve safety, encourage more walking and bicycling to school, and reduce congestion around schools during pick-up and drop-off time periods.

These changes are temporary in nature and would revert to the previous conditions unless Traffic Council subsequently votes to make these changes permanent.

See letter and map detailing changes for this fall.
