New Old Image eXchange

A day of readings, presentations, and panel discussions including visiting speakers and students examining and proposing new meanings for old, forgotten, and unused photographs. This program created a dialogue across multiple disciplines, both inside and outside the arts, concerned with the malleable meaning and value of forgotten personal photographs. By providing the time and space to explore narrative meanings held in a singular photographic image, this event provided a counterpoint to the fast paced and endless scrolling production and distribution of mass images all around us.

Keynote Speaker: Carmen Winant, Roy Lichtenstein Chair of Studio Art, Ohio State University
Featuring keynote lecture by emerging artist and writer, Carmen Winant, recently profiled in Vogue Magazine, whose work My Birth was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art (Artsy Review) in 2018.
Carmen Winant is an artist, writer, former Dean of the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and the Roy Lichtenstein Endowed Chair of Studio Art at The Ohio State University. She received her BA from UCLA and master’s degrees in Critical Studies and Fine Arts from the California College of the Arts in 2011. Winant’s recent projects have been shown at the Museum of Modern Art, Sculpture Center, The Columbus Museum of Art, and The Wexner Center of the Arts; her artist books [My Life as a Man and My Birth] were published by Horses Think Press, SPBH Editions, and ITI press. Her work utilizes installation and collage strategies to examine feminist modes of survival and revolt.
Curatorial Team
Artists Cassidy Brauner, Courtney Kessel, and Daniel King are coordinating the New Old Image eXchange event at the School of Art + Design at Ohio University in 2019. Each brings experience in curatorial, exhibition planning, publishing, marketing and arts programming, and the team will make co-curate the work submitted for this call, and the related event, New Old Image eXchange.
Daniel King (danieljacobking.com)
An artist/educator making lens-based work with a tendency toward the idiosyncratic human relationship to place, geography, and representation. While his formal education is in photographic studio art, he gets easily bored with taking pictures. He returns again to explore the visual and conceptual possibilities that exist in the process of experiencing place in all its complexity, recognizing the mediation that defines our relationship to place and the anxiety of the photographic image and related texts.
Cassidy Brauner (cassidybrauner.com)
Raised in Plain City, Ohio, Brauner concentrated in Photography and Visual Communications with a minor in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Otterbein University (BA). Cassidy has exhibited her work in shows nationally and internationally. She was an Artist in Resident at Otterbein University from 2014-2015. Cassidy graduated from Ohio University in 2018 with her Masters of Fine Arts in Photography where she was also is an Instructor of Record. She currently teaches at Ohio University and runs photo facilities as the Emerging Artist Post-Graduate Fellow in Photography and Integrated Media.
Courtney Kessel (courtneykessel.com)
A mother, artist, academic, and arts administrator living and working in Athens, Ohio. Kessel exhibits her work nationally and internationally including the China Art Museum, Shanghai, New Maternalisms, Chile at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Santiago Chile and New Maternalisms: Redux at the University of Alberta, Canada, FAMILY MATTERS: Living and Representing Today’s Family, Centre for Contemporary Culture Strozzina, Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi, Florence, Italy, the Tampa Museum of Art, and Exit Art, New York, New York. She has lectured on her work and research in both universities and museums internationally including the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, FL, Brigham Young University Art Museum, Provo, UT, The Mothernists conference, Rotterdam, Netherlands, Mapping Maternal Ethics, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada and at the forthcoming conference The Mothernists 2: Who Cares for the 21st Century, Astrid Noachs Atelier, Copenhagen, Denmark.
