New Brighton Middle School Surf Team & Club abides by good sportsmanship and expects the same from coaches, athletes and parents. In all NBMS Surf activities, be safe, courteous, fair, controlled, and show respect to fellow surfers, officials, coaches, spectators, local residents and their property and the environment. The use of foul language, violence, or illegal substances is prohibited.
Here our water guidelines you are agreeing to follow with your registration for Team or Club:
All surfers must wear a white rash guard during practice and return it to the volunteer team after use. This is mandatory when in the water and not negotiable. For our team surfers, it will help coaches identify who is on the team, keep everybody safe and evaluate surfers to placement in team competitions.
Rash guards are NOT to be taken home.
If there are any issues during practice, surfers should seek help from any of the coaches in the water. In addition to coaching, we will be helping with conflict resolution, safety and all other concerns. Coaches will all be wearing red rash guards.
Follow these surf etiquette guidelines at all times:
a) Don’t drop in. The surfer closest to the peak has the right of way.
b) When paddling out to the line up, try your best to stay out of the way of the surfers coming down the line. Paddle into the curl when needed. If you are surfing on a wave and endangering a surfer paddling out, pull out. It’s not worth injuring somebody over getting a good wave.
c) Don’t snake another surfer (paddling behind them to get into a priority position).
d) Learn to take turns. If someone has been waiting longer than you, they have the first choice of the next wave. Don’t hog all the waves even if you are more skilled than other surfers/teammates.
e) Respect the vibe in the line-up. Say hello and introduce yourself to the regulars. Be aware of your surroundings.
f) Always help any other surfer in trouble. Get a coach’s attention.
g) Keep control of your board. Don’t let go, learn how to duck dive, turtle or hold your longboard on the nose. All coaches can help with learning these techniques.
h) Have fun and be safe!
Here our additional guidelines for our Club Surfers:
NBMS Surf Club is run by parent volunteers - we are not professional lifeguards or hired babysitters. We will not “convince” your child to go into the water or stop them from leaving practice to go to the Village.
