Pastel Journeys: Other Landscapes

These pastels are from my onsite drawings. They span from Southern California to Florida, Greece, England, Argentina, France, and through traveling the US. They are all impressions.

The thing about plein air drawing is that the light changes due to the Earth's orbit—what may have excited my enthusiasm for a scene may look completely different in an hour due to the light change.

What I do is give myself about 10 minutes to compose the drawing, then I give myself 35 minutes to finish the drawing. I actually time myself. When the alarm goes off, I stop, no matter how much I want to continue, because I know I will start chasing the light, seeing new things, resulting in a pastel drawing as dull as shit.

Cezanne mentioned somewhere the half-hour rule, and I have found that to be gold.
