The primary goal of our laboratory is to understand the cellular, molecular, and genetic mechanisms of synaptic functions and how synapses are remodeled under diseased conditions. To achieve this, we undertake a multidisciplinary approach involving genetics, molecular biology, and electrophysiology coupled with live cell imaging. In addition to researching the basic mechanisms underlying synaptic functions, we are attempting to study human neurological disorders using Drosophila as a model system with various collaborative ventures.

Theme 1: Regulation of Neuronal Signalling and Synaptic Morphogenesis by BAR-domain Family Proteins
Neuromorphogenesis involves dynamic changes in the neuronal membrane as well as structural changes in the underlying neuronal cytoskeleton. Several studies have implicated the role of the Bin-Amphiphysin-Rvs (BAR) domain-containing proteins with membrane-deforming properties in shaping up neuronal morphology. We are utilizing genetic and biochemical approaches to gain deeper insights into BAR proteins, specifically in the context of neuronal function and development.
Theme 2: Regulation of Protein Misfolding and Aggregation by Molecular Chaperones in Neurodegenerative Diseases
Protein misfolding, aggregation, and accumulation of non-functional proteins are hallmarks of neurodegenerative diseases. These events lead to cellular dysfunction, loss of synaptic connection, and neuronal death, leading to compromised learning, memory, and cognition. Our current focus is to understand how chaperones maintain protein homeostasis in neurons and how deregulated proteostasis induces neurodegeneration.
