Design Intent
How does the change in a building type break the hierarchical institutional framework of a police station? How does it affect an individual of lower rank? What are softer forms of hierarchy that spatially increase interaction within the police officers as well as between the public?
My design intent was to create spaces which are less intimidating in terms of rank hierarchies which are of a balanced nature when it comes to concepts like privacy and publicness.
Design strategies
Through my genealogical case studies, I found that the older types fostered spaces like connecting rooms, corridors, verandah and courtyards creating these interactive spaces. Taking this forward, corridors and courtyards become the elements of connection, allowing the entire police station to be experienced as a sequence of corridors and courtyards allowing those connections and creating leisure spaces as well through a breaking point of courtyards. The spatial configuration is imagined through grids and varying levels, offering spatial justice by ensuring proportional distribution of spaces and avoiding the hierarchical divisions traditionally imposed by floors.
