After you have been accepted into Peer Tutors, you will be emailed more information, including: the Google Classroom code (which you MUST join), Remind, and your Schedule.
Tutoring is flexible and will happen based on YOUR AVAILABILITY. When you apply, you fill out when you are available from Monday to Friday. From there we will assign you sessions on the schedule based on what availability times you put. If your availability times ever change, please let us know. Our monthly check-in meetings are typically during lunch. We will always send out an email and an announcement in the Google Classroom and loudspeaker about the meetings. Although they are considered mandatory, if for whatever urgent reason you cannot attend, please let us know. Meeting slides are always posted on Google Classroom, but it is better when you attend our meetings to reduce any confusion. You are REQUIRED to fill out our monthly check-in google form.
If you were accepted, you should have received an email from nestmpeertutors@gmail.com, titled "You have been accepted to Peer Tutors!". Please read the information carefully. You MUST join the Google Classroom (you will be given a code in the email). You also MUST look at the Peer Tutors Schedule. All tutor names are in alphabetical order by first name. Please find your row and see what sessions you were assigned to (it may be helpful to take a screenshot or jot it down in a notes app). This schedule may change, so please look at it frequently! PLEASE CHECK YOUR EMAIL INBOX AND GOOGLE CLASSROOM OFTEN! We will often send out important information and opportunities for you. In addition to this, we will also have monthly check-in meetings—these will be mandatory for you to attend.
If you were assigned a tutee, you should have gotten an email from nestmpeertutors@gmail.com, and the email would most likely be labeled "You have been matched with a tutor!". We have CC'd you on this email, which informs the tutee of their matching. It is your responsibility to reach out to them by email and exchange contact information. If for whatever reason they do not respond in 1-2 weeks, please let us know, and we will reassign you. In the email, it should tell you the day of the week, time, and room number for your session. Please prioritize sessions with your tutee! Communication is key; if one of you cannot attend a session, please let each other know.
For sessions during lunch: the library should always be open in case your room is not available for whatever reason.
If you were assigned an office hour session, please go to that teacher's room during the given time stated on your row of the Peer Tutoring schedule. From there, the teacher could assign you tasks (such as stapling paper, taking down or hanging up stuff on the bulletin boards, etc.) or assign you to help a student who came to their office hours. You can have the teacher fill out your community service hours at the end of every session OR accumulate the hours and have them fill it out at the end of every month. It is important to communicate with the teacher. If you are unable to make a session, it is good to let them know beforehand.
If you were not matched yet, don't worry! There are still many ways you can earn volunteer hours. You can make study guides, find practice problems, etc., and have your work featured on our Learning Resources page while getting volunteer hours! Please send/share your work with nestmpeertutors@gmail.com and arubenstein@schools.nyc.gov. If you want, you can also reach out to teachers on your own. You can let them know that you are a peer tutor and would like a task and are happy to assist them. From there they could potentially let you know when they get the most students coming to their room or they could give you tasks to do (such as stapling or organizing papers, hanging up or taking stuff down from bulletin boards, etc.) Also, feel free to look at the UG Official Office Hours document in our Google Classroom and attend those sessions if you are available.
All hours wil be earned if you complete the monthly tutor hour log in the Google Classroom. This should be completed before the end of the month @11:59PM. Your volunteer hours will be sent to the guidance counselor's office. If we see that you have not been tutoring for at least an hour a week you will recieve warning emails from us unless you communicate a valid reason. If you recieve 3 warning emails, you must meet with our board to discuss further action.
Book Buddies is our partner initiative. It was created by NEST+m's Communications Club, and it is a K-5 lunch tutoring program that occurs during 7th period lunch. You would go to K-5 classrooms and interact with kids and complete tasks given by the teacher. If you are interested in this, please fill out this form. You will then receive more information from the Communications Club and attend your sessions. You are also responsible for keeping track of your own volunteer hours.
