Teaching

I teach the following courses. Course materials are housed on Canvas.

Geospatial Field Methods, GEOG 4100. This class introduces students to geodesy (specifics of coordinate systems including geoids), differential global navigation satellite system measurements (survey-grade GPS), and structure-from-motion photogrammetry. It normally includes working with sUAS (small drones), and a class project.

Structure and Tectonics, GEO 3700. In Structure and Tectonics, we cover the basics of deformation of the Earth's crust and lithosphere, including plate tectonics, folding, and faulting. The class includes an introduction to rock mechanics, which is beneficial to understanding deformation and tectonics, geologic hazards, and the geotechnical work that many students become involved with in their future careers.

Field Methods, GEO 4600. I co-teach this class with Drs. Stephen, Czajka, Stearns, and Toke. It is our 'field camp' course taught over 5 weeks in the summer, virtually entirely in the field. My component covers mapping and interpretation of bedrock geology and structures.

Introduction to Geology, GEO 1010. This is a mainstay introductory course that is a physical science general education course, and an entry point to majoring in departmental programs. We cover plate tectonics, rocks and minerals, geologic hazards, and surficial geology which importantly includes environmental geology (many students don't realize that geology is probably the number one pathway to a career doing physical environmental science). I mostly teach this class face-to-face, but also teach it online on occasion.

Introduction to Meteorology, METO 1010. This also is an introductory class that is an general education course, and is important to Aviation Science majors. I teach it both online and face-to-face. We have a lot of fun in this class learning about weather and climate and improving quantitative skills. And I'm proud to help students with the bits of math present in the online laboratory exercises.

Introduction to Oceanography, GEO 1080. I occasionally teach this class face-to-face and have a great time with it. It is a general education course that combines ocean science with plate tectonics.
