It has been a long time since we have had an update! But PLS data entry has continued steadily since our last update in 2021! During Fall 2025 and now Spring 2026 we have two students, Mia Drake and Sherroya Robb, leading the data entry.
We are working on a new project in conjunction with the USDA Forest Service to Map Trees in the Transition Hills region of southern Indiana. The Transition Hills region is the yellow outlined area in the map of southern Indiana below. As shown in Figure 1, all the townships within the Transition Hills region have been entered into the Notre Dame database. Figure 2 shows the 59 townships in the Transition Hills region that need to have the tree information georeferenced to the x,y coordinates for each of the township corners. Finalizing the georeferencing and continuing to enter the yellow and purple townships are the priorities for the Spring 2026 semester.
Figure 1. Southern Indiana townships. The yellow outline is the Transition Hills region. Townships in green have been entered into the Notre Dame database. Townships in yellow or purple are in the process of being entered. White townships will be entered in the future.
Figure 2. Southern Indiana townships. The blue dots are the township corners with georeferenced tree information, where the information in the Notre Dame database for the trees at each township corner is georeferenced to the x,y coordinates of the township corners.
As in Figure 1, the yellow outline is the Transition Hills region. Townships in green have been entered into the Notre Dame database and are ready to be georeferenced. Townships in yellow or purple are in the process of being entered. White townships will be entered in the future.
