England’s Young Lionesses saw a hard-earned victory slip away after a stoppage-time equalizer from the Netherlands’ Oranje Leeuwinnen forced a 1–1 draw in the semifinals of the Women’s U23 Soccer tournament on March 6, 2026. They should have won, but the unnecessary overtime stole their victory.
What looked like a secured win for the girls in white turned into heartbreak after an additional six minutes of stoppage time allowed the Dutch side one last opportunity to strike.
“It is really a tough result and unacceptable at first, but I am very proud of the girls because I can say that we are already building it now,” Young Lionesses defender Jess Simpson said.
From the opening whistle, the Lionesses dictated the tempo of the match. Their aggressive pressing and fluid passing immediately put pressure on the Dutch defense.
Lenna Gunning-Williams led the charge, displaying sharp dribbling and strong leadership up front that kept the Oranje backline unsettled.
Simpson also played a key role in igniting England’s attack, delivering quick passes that created space and momentum for the home side.
Their persistence finally paid off when the Lionesses exposed a gap in the Dutch defense. Simpson initiated a clever give-and-go play that freed Williams inside the box, allowing her to finish with a precise header that gave England a 1–0 lead.
“Lionesses should be really proud, especially Williams and Simpson, as they fired up the match with their first goal. It was brilliant teamwork,” former footballer and analyst Lianne Sanderson said.
With the match seemingly decided, the officials awarded an additional six minutes of stoppage time—a decision that ultimately changed the outcome of the semifinal clash.
The extra minutes gave the Dutch side a final opportunity to mount an attack.
Rosa Van Gool seized that chance in the dying moments, breaking through England’s defense and delivering a clutch finish that leveled the score at 1–1 with just minutes remaining.
The Lionesses attempted to regain the lead in the final moments, but the Netherlands tightened their defense and successfully held off the last English push.
Essential? Or just a waste of time?
Their 90-minute domination is enough to prove their victory, but the time didn't favor them.
For a former soccer player and an analyst, this stoppage time is not necessary.
“I think the substitutions during the game didn’t disrupt the game at all, but it almost enhanced it, from the start till the end, like the game intensity,” Sanderson said
Despite a victory that got away, what victory was for me was the journey, not the destination. It was hard-earned and enough to prove great skill beyond the rules of time.
