Lenna Gunning-Williams and England’s Young Lionesses were denied a victory in the semifinals of Women’s U23 Soccer after a crucial stoppage-time equalizer by the Netherlands’ Oranje Leeuwinnen, leading to a draw 1-1, at the Crowd Weadom Stadium, England, on March 6, 2026.
“It is really a tough result and unacceptable at first, but I am very proud of the girls because I can say that we are already building it now,” Jess Simpson, a side defender of Young Lionesses, said.
Whites early ruled the pitch
In the early frame of the match, Lioness ignited the match with their commendable game mechanics, running and attempting for an early surge goal.
Lenna Williams led the charge for the Lionesses, showcasing her commendable dribbling and leading skills, rattling the defense of Oranje.
Meanwhile, Jess Simpson also displayed her quick pass plays, sparking an offensive rhythm for the Lionesses.
Their early surge saw an open spot in the sleeping defense of Oranje. With Simpson’s assists and a deceptive give-and-go, Williams delivered a brilliant header goal, securing the first point of the match for the girls in white, 1-0.
“Lionesses should be really proud, especially Williams and Simpsons, as they fire up the match with their first goal, and it is a really brilliant teamwork,” Lianne Sanderson, a former football player and analyst, said.
Deadlock second half
Second half started with both teams trading blows back-and-forth.
Oranje tried to keep up with the early surge of Lionesses, activating their defense with the command of Regina Van Eijk guarding the net and rejecting the goal attempts of the opponents to neutralize their offensive rhythm.
On the other hand, Lioness tried to score their second goal and point by creating numerous goal attempts from the side-to-side.
In 45 minutes of trying and attempting, none of the team succeeded, resulting in a 1-0 in the 90 minutes of the match.
Decisive additional six-minute battle
The match could have been rewarded for the Lionesses; however, the committee decided for an additional 6 minutes, and a stoppage-time was given a chance to the Oranje to equalize the match.
Oranje capitalized on the overtime, loading their firepower.
Rosa Van Gool came up clutch in the last 2 minutes of overtime, executing a ferocious breakaway to tie the score, 1-1.
Lionesses also tried to steal another score in the last minute of the match, but Oranje tightened their defense, stunning the attempt of Lionesses.
After an exhausting 96-minute battle, the match has been concluded as a draw.
The rematch of the semifinals of the U23 Women's Soccer will take place in Spain in April 2026.
