Nano and Computational Materials Lab (NCMLAB) is a vibrant research group at CSIR NCL with highly motivated and enthusiastic young researchers including post-doctoral fellows, Senior Research Fellow, Junior Research Fellows, Project Assistants, Post-graduate project Fellows, and guest researchers. NCMLAB is lead by Kaliaperumal Selvaraj, Principal Scientist & Associate Professor, Catalysis Division, CSIR - National Chemical Laboratory, Pune. He has a Materials Chemistry background and leading major research programs under national missions such as Energy and Energy Devices and Hydrogen Energy. He works on developing sustainable technologies for energy, environmental and medicine applications.
Selvaraj works on developing sustainable and effective solutions to the globally influencing energy, environmental and nanomedical issues. Besides experimental and synthetic approaches toward using nanoscience and nanotechnology for various applications, he also uses computational approaches (Density Functional Theory) to understand the structure-property correlations. His group, NCMLAB, is active in the rational design of functional materials to develop sustainable technologies for various applications, including heterogeneous, electrocatalysis, drug delivery systems, clean power production and storage and electronic ceramics. NCMLAB's research encompasses from fundamental science to translational technologies due to active research contributions by highly motivated young researchers, including Junior and Senior Research Fellows, post-doctoral fellows, Project assistants and associates and PG project students. He is also the Scientist-in-charge of the Central Microscopy Facility at CSIR - NCL, a central analytical facility servicing the research requirement of NCL, research institutes/ universities and industries across the nation.
Kaliaperumal Selvaraj was born and raised till schooling at Thiruvarur, a historical town & capital of once Chola dynasty in Tamilnadu State. His motivation for science was due to his chemistry mentor Prof. S. Chidambaram (during graduation) at Thiru. Vi. Ka. Govt. Arts College, Thiruvarur, by Prof. T. Balakrishnan (during post-graduation) at the University Department of Physical Chemistry, University of Madras University, Guindy Campus.
Kaliaperumal Selvaraj
He obtained his Ph.D degree in chemistry from the CSIR National Chemical Laboratory and obtained under the mentoring of Dr. Paul Ratnasamy initially and later by Dr. A. V. Ramaswamy at the National Chemical Laboratory in 2000. His Ph.D research was on the Materials Science of silicates. He was an assistant professor at the University Department of Chemistry, Pune University where he taught Physical Chemistry, Biophysical Chemistry, Instrumental Methods, and Spectroscopy to post-graduates during which period he visited the lab of Prof. Dr. Ir. J. E. Ten Elshof at MESA+, University of Twente, The Netherlands. He was an ANR visiting researcher to ICG, a CNRS laboratory at Montpellier, France between 2006 to 2008. He was mentored by Prof. Jean Marie Devoiselle and Dr. Sylvie Begu.
He is a research scientist at CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory since 2002. Current high-priority programs of his group, NCMLAB, includes (i) Developing technologies for clean and sustainable energy (ii) Developing 2D and 3D carbon materials for novel functional materials energy and environment and (iiI) multifunctional nanosystems for biomedical applications and health such as medical diagnostics, targeted drug delivery, chemotherapy, photothermally controlled drug release and hyperthermia. These are largely supported by funds from CSIR through schemes such as EMPOWER, Hydrogen Mission, Energy FTT and SERB DST etc.,
Selvaraj is a member of several policy-making bodies and academic societies. He is a member of the National Mirror Committee of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the International Standards Organisation (ISO). He has been nominated as a member of the Hydrogen Fuels Reference Committee. He is a member of the Hydrogen Strategy Group (HSG), Hydrogen Technology Mission, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. He is a member of several National and International societies such as the International Zeolite Association, the American Chemical Society, the Materials Research Society of India, the Electron Microscopy Society of India, the Indian Society for Electro-Analytical Chemistry etc.
