Laboratory History
The predecessor of the iUAS Lab was the Remotely Piloted Vehicle & Micro Satellite Research Laboratory (RMRL) at National Cheng Kung University, founded in 1985 by Chair Professor Fei-Bin Hsiao. Since its establishment, RMRL has been a pioneer in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) research and development in Taiwan. Initially focusing on the aerodynamic design and payload testing of fixed-wing UAVs, the Lab. gradually expanded into beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) autonomous flight, ground target tracking, real-time image transmission, and system integration. Professor Ying-Chih Lai, the current supervisor of the iUAS Lab, was himself a student of RMRL and contributed to its landmark achievements. In 2005, RMRL unveiled the SWAN UAV (news-secr.ncku.edu.tw/p/404-1037-49015.php), completing an autonomous BVLOS cross-sea flight from Donggang, Pingtung, to Liuqiu Island and back. In 2009, the Spoonbill UAV (https://web.ncku.edu.tw/p/406-1000-59042,r515.php?Lang=en) set a new record by flying from Qigu, Tainan, across the Taiwan Strait to Dongji Island in Penghu and safely returning, covering a total distance of approximately 92 kilometers, cementing Taiwan’s international standing in the field of long-range UAVs.
In 2018, Professor Lai took over the leadership of RMRL and officially renamed it the intelligent unmanned aircraft systems laboratory (iUAS Lab), marking the beginning of a new chapter in its history.
實驗室歷史沿革
智慧無人機系統實驗室 (iUAS) 前身為國立成功大學遙控飛行器與微衛星研究實驗室(RMRL),由蕭飛賓講座教授於1985年創立。自成立以來,RMRL一直是台灣無人機研發領域的先驅之一。創立初期,實驗室專注於固定翼無人機的氣動設計和有效載荷測試,後來逐步拓展到超視距自主飛行、地面目標追蹤、即時影像傳輸和系統整合等多元研究領域。
現任指導教授賴盈誌老師為RMRL出身之優秀校友,並持續推動實驗室於研發及應用上的創新突破。2005年,實驗室研製的SWAN無人機成功完成屏東港至琉球島的超視距跨海自主飛行,奠定我國無人機長程飛行技術的重要里程碑。2009年,琵鷺無人機創下從台南七股跨越台灣海峽的長距離自主飛行紀錄,進一步鞏固實驗室在國內無人機技術領域的領導地位。
2018年,賴盈誌教授接任實驗室指導老師,並將其正式更名為智慧無人機系統實驗室(iUAS Lab),象徵實驗室在無人機與民航領域的智慧化、系統化及多元應用領域邁入全新發展階段。
