What is Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS)?
Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) is an essential part of education that prepares students with the skills they need for everyday life and future careers. FCS focuses on building strong individuals, families, and communities by teaching valuable skills that apply to personal and professional life.

FCS Courses Offer at Newton College & Career Academy
At Newton College and Career Academy (NCCA), students have the opportunity to enroll in Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) courses that provide practical skills and knowledge for personal and professional success. These courses are designed to prepare students for various career paths and equip them with essential life skills.
Culinary Arts Pathway
The Culinary Arts program at NCCA introduces students to fundamental food preparation terms, concepts, and methods. Through hands-on laboratory practice, students master basic kitchen and dining room safety, sanitation, equipment maintenance, and operation procedures. The curriculum prepares students for positions such as chefs, cooks, and food preparation workers, covering a wide range of foods—from soups and salads to entrées and desserts. The pathway includes the following courses:
• Introduction to Culinary Arts
• Culinary Arts I
• Culinary Arts II
• Baking & Pastry I
• Baking & Pastry II
Upon completion, students have the opportunity to earn certifications such as the ServSafe Certification and Managers Certification.
Early Childhood Education Pathway
The Early Childhood Education pathway prepares students for careers in childcare and education. This pathway equips students with the skills necessary to pursue careers in early childhood education settings.

NCCA ECE associates volunteering with Newton County's Special Olympics at their Annual Bowling Event on December 12, 2024! All associates did an amazing job, as well as played a few games and enjoyed lunch at the Covington Town Center Shopping Plaza!

NCCA Culinary Arts students and NCCA FCCLA members joined forces to volunteer for Newton County's 2024 Change the World community service project. We served over 2,500 sweet treats and handed out food pallets with the Giving Hands Food Pantry. The weather was perfect, and all student volunteers did an amazing job!

FCCLA stands for Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America. It’s a national Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) that focuses on preparing students for leadership roles in their families, careers, and communities.
What Does FCCLA Do?
FCCLA gives students opportunities to grow as leaders and make an impact.
• Leadership Development: Participate in workshops, conferences, and training to develop skills in teamwork, communication, and decision-making.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO BE A MEMBER OF FCCLA?
Any student who has taken a course in Family and Consumer Sciences, or as determined by the state department of education, middle school through grade 12 is eligible for active membership in an organized FCCLA chapter within their school. Once the state and national dues are paid, the student will be an official affiliated member. Teachers can join FCCLA too! Teachers certified to teach Family and Consumer Sciences education, or as determined by the state department of education, can serve as the FCCLA chapter adviser.
