Camp Carefree – Stokesdale – a state altruistic project!
Provides free one-week overnight camp experience for youth with specific health challenges and disabilities
275 Carefree Lane, Stokesdale, NC 27357
Since 1986 Camp Carefree in Stokesdale has provided a free one-week camping experience for children with chronic illnesses. The program also includes camps for well siblings of ill children and a week for children with a sick parent. Many children with serious health problems live protected lives and spend a good deal of their young lives in hospitals and doctors’ offices. Camp Carefree provides them with needed freedom to play, learn and have fun with others who encounter similar difficulties. The psychological, recreational, and physical benefits of camping with their peers can help make their personal battles easier to bear. Sharing their feelings with others who really know what it’s like to live with someone with a chronic health problem or disability helps these children know they are not alone in their plight. The emphasis, however, is on wellness and fun.
At the Ronald McDonald House Charities of North Carolina, their commitment to children’s health and well-being means that they support children statewide. From the six Ronald McDonald Houses serving as “homes away from home” for families with seriously ill children receiving treatment at local medical facilities to annual scholarships and grants for community programming, their outreach touches thousands of children each year. One of the most important things that the Houses provide is the chance for families to stop worrying about logistics and the financial burden of room and board. Staying at the Houses allow families to focus their energy on what’s important, the health of their child. When families face a medical crisis, being together is a crucial part of the healing process. The Houses help provide the best medicine of all – the gift of togetherness.
