Accessing Assignments
All assignments are provided on Canvas, in course unit packets, and in the course textbook materials, etc.
Asking for Help
If a student requires help from the teacher, they may raise their hand and/or alert the teacher as needed.
When possible, students are encouraged to ask their partners/teammates prior to asking the teacher.
In order to receive help, a student must be able to articulate the particular issue they need help with and demonstrate a willingness to be coached. All questions must be asked calmly and respectfully.
If the teacher is helping someone else and a student has had their hand raised for longer than a minute they may get up to get the teacher's attention.
Clean Up
All students must “leave no trace” and pick up/clean up any materials used prior to the end of class.
Any items that are damaged must be reported to the teacher immediately or risk being considered vandalism.
All materials used for the activity must be returned by the end of class.
Computers
Chromebooks should be used to complete necessary classwork. Sometimes students will not need the Chromebook and will be asked to stow the Chromebook.
Anytime an assignment is to be done in class digitally, student internet use will be monitored by the teacher using classwise.
If a student is without a computer, they can complete the assignment using paper/pencil.
Each student is provided with a charger for their Chromebook. Chromebooks should be charged each night and be ready for use during the school day. There will be access to outlets if a student needs to charge their computer however students are expected to use their own charger.
Even if a student is BYOD, they will sometimes need to use their school Chromebook to access assignments.
Entering the classroom
Students enter the classroom quietly and swiftly put their cellphone in the teacher provided “phone home” or OFF in their own book bag.
Students must immediately load their Chromebooks and review the daily agenda as posted on Canvas/the Classroom Screen.
Food/Drink
If possible, all food should be consumed outside of the classroom.
Students are allowed to have water bottles, however they must not be disruptive and should be placed in an area where they are not likely to spill.
If a student makes a mess, they are responsible for cleaning it up immediately.
Getting Materials
Students are allowed to move from their seats to get materials or throw away trash as needed.
Students must be cognizant of others and ensure that they are not disrupting the learning environment.
Students who abuse this privilege will possibly lose this privilege and be required to ask for permission to leave their seat.
Make Up & Late Work
NEW: Late work will ONLY be accepted for EXCUSED absences, unless you negotiate with me BEFORE the absence. The instructor reserves the right to deal with specific late work and make-up work issues on a case by case basis.
The general rules that will apply for EXCUSED absences are as follows:
If you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to make up the work you missed. You MUST ASK ME about it.
You have THREE days to get in regular assignments after an EXCUSED absence.
At the end of each Unit, any “1” grades will revert to a “0.” Once it is a 0, it is no longer negotiable.
You can resubmit any non-zero assignment below a level 70% as a redo.
**If you are not absent and simply fail to complete the assignment during the given time (turned in the next day, aka HOMEWORK), it will be considered unexcused and will receive a grade of “0”. **
Phones
All student phones are placed in the teacher provided box as students enter the room or stowed in the student’s backpack.
There are no exceptions to this rule unless a student must have access to their phone due to a medical need.
If a student uses a phone during class the phone will be confiscated.
YOU MAY NOT HAVE THESE, IT IS NOW THE LAW.
Students may not have in airpods or have on headphones. The only exception is WIRED earbuds/headphones for an edpuzzle.
Required Materials
Students are expected to bring the following materials to class each day:
pencil
pen
notebook paper
Chromebook.
Restroom & Hall Passes
Our class utilizes e-Pass for all passes.
Per NBHS policies, no student can leave the classroom during the first or last 15 minutes of the class period.
Students may complete the e-hall pass on their own as long as it does not become disruptive to the class and is not during direct instruction.
Students must still take a physical pass lanyard with them to and from the restroom.
Students should attempt to keep bathroom passes to a minimum and should not leave the classroom when the teacher is teaching unless it is an emergency.
Continual, excessive use will result in a conference with the student and/or their parents/guardians.
For passes other than restroom passes, students must ask permission from the teacher and be approved in e-hall pass. Students must still take the required lanyard.
Returning Papers
The majority of assignments are graded within 3-5 school days. Lengthy assignments such as essays or projects will be returned within 10 school days.
If a student is absent the day a graded paper is passed back out, it will be placed in the paper storage for your class period.
Saving Ideas and Resources
When creating an electronic document for class it should include the following in the title: Student Name, Date, Course, Assignment Name
Seating
Students are placed in assigned seats and then are adjusted as needed.
Classes that maintain good work ethic and behavior can earn the right to request who they sit with up to a point.
**Seats may be changed at any time at the teacher’s discretion.**
Transitions
Between activities, the transition time is to be utilized as a seamless bridge from one activity to another.
Students not abiding by this procedure may be asked to move seats or be redirected in other ways.
Submitting Assignments
Assignments completed digitally must be submitted through Canvas, attaching them to the appropriate assignment.
Assignments completed on paper must be submitted to the class turn in box. It will be clearly marked in the classroom.
Working in Groups
During group work time, all students are required to evenly distribute the group tasks and communicate with one another per the expectations below.
Student conversations will stay on task and focused using the lowest voice volume possible
Students will hold each other accountable to work as a team to complete the assignment. If it is noted that a student is not completing their part of the assignment, their grade will reflect this and they may be prohibited from further group work at teacher discretion
Students are not to simply copy from each other. They must discuss each part of the work and rewrite anything as needed in their own words
Working Independently
During independent work time students will be given verbal, visual (agenda/directions on board or on digital assignment), and tangible (worksheet/workbook) instructions on what to complete alongside frequent reminders during circulation.
During the time set aside for students to work on their reading notes. Students must remain silent and focused on their own work.
For other independent assignments, if given permission to do so, students may whisper quietly with their partner/table mates when completing independent assignments as long as the students are on task. Students are encouraged to help each other and to engage in academic discourse but each student must do their own work.
Upon teacher discretion, music may be played while students are completing independent work. (I will play the music)
Exiting the classroom
In the last 3-5 minutes of class, when directed by the teacher, students will pack up their belongings, clean up their area, and prepare for the end of class. Students must listen carefully for last reminders and directions specific to that day. All materials borrowed for that day must be returned. Any trash under/on/around the desk must be thrown away. Phones will be distributed back to students.
Students may not leave their seats until the bell has rung AND the teacher has dismissed them. All chairs must be pushed in, and the last period must put all chairs on top of the desks.
Students must exit the classroom one by one, swiftly but carefully.
Students are expected to behave in the virtual classroom in much the same way that they would in the physical classroom.
Etiquette in the virtual classroom is the same as the physical:
Wear clothes
Be awake
Watch your language
Be present, both mentally and physically.
This includes checking in for attendance daily and stopping into office hours to say hello if possible.
Be engaged in the material as class progresses.
Do all of the work expected of you.
Ask for help when needed.
We have done this before and it's not for too terribly long, you know how to do online school. Many people have told me that they did not do well with online school because they didn't pay attention. Here's your chance to do it right this time:
Sit in a chair or at a table.
DON'T have the TV on.
DON'T be on your phone.
DO have your camera on.
If you have a question, ASK IT. I guarantee you someone else has the same question, but is too shy to ask. Use the chat function if that's easier, but ASK.
Pretend that your class is an interactive show you're watching. I've always wanted to be able to ask actors questions and make comments, Now you can!
