General Overview: This class is likely going to be unlike any other that you have taken up to this point. This is a social science class, which is not something that gets a lot of attention in high school, though for the life of me I cannot figure out why as it is incredibly helpful. Due to the nature of this class, you are going to be exposed to terminology and thinking styles that will be foreign to you and altogether unique to the discipline. It may be confusing, it may be frustrating, but I assure you that if you stick with it that frustration will diminish and you will come out of this class with a better understanding of your fellow man and what makes him tick. As Psychology is also a relatively new science that means it is ever evolving, which makes it both fascinating and demanding. The wonderful thing about psychology is that you will DEFINITELY use it outside of school, after you graduate, and throughout your life.
The Text: Advanced Placement Psychology by David Meyers (2nd Edition). This is not the most recent edition, and I will do my best to align the reading to the new course material. If you want to purchase a copy of the book for yourself let me know and I can give you the correct reading for the section we are covering.
3rd Quarter Objectives: During the third quarter you will be introduced to psychology at a level consistent with an AP or college level course. We will cover the first 2/3s of our course. We will aim to be done with content right around Spring Break (Hopefully right before!). The primary objective is to begin a study of general topic areas in the field of psychology and to begin to learn how to do basic research in this field.
My Expectations: Students will be expected to do the following during this class: 1) Read the textbook as material is covered in class. 2) Complete in-class and outside assignments on a timely basis 3) Contribute to class discussions 4) Complete a basic research project on a topic related to the field of psychology.
Methodology: The information in this course will be presented in a variety of ways. There will be lectures, class participation projects, and audio-visual aids. Psychology is a fascinating science, and it is possible to explore this field through a variety of methods. We will take advantage of these various possibilities.
AP Course Demands: It should be understood at the beginning that the expectations of this course are in line with those of any Advanced Placement (AP) course. Students should expect a workload similar to what they would have if they were to complete this course at a college campus. This includes reading, active participation in class discussion, taking notes, and doing research.
The AP Exam: One of my goals for this course is to prepare you to take the AP Exam with the hope that all of you will do well on this test. A passing score will earn you college credit for this class. All students enrolled in AP classes this year must take the AP Exam to receive AP credit. The school will pay the fee for you to take the exam. If you choose not to take the exam you will need to pay the school 94$ (the cost of the test that they prepaid for you) and you will receive honors credit for the class instead of AP.
The exam has changed this year. The exam is now 2 hours and 45 minutes long. It will include a 90 minute section of 75 multiple choice questions and will be worth 66.7% of the final exam grade. It will also include a 70 minute section of two free response questions (AAQ & EBQ) that will be worth 33.3% of the final exam grade. Classroom tests will be designed to emulate this format.
Research Project: A major research project will be assigned each quarter. These assignments will introduce you to the various types of research that are done in psychology including basic, applied, and clinical research. The project for this quarter will be an applied project that will center around things that we will learn in a unit about developmental psychology. This will be due in early March.
Classroom Issues: This classroom will be our home for the next 6 months. Please treat it with respect and help me to keep it neat and clean. I will allow you to have drinks of any kind so long as you clean up after yourselves and do not abuse this freedom. Make sure that all cans, bottles and cups are disposed of in the correct areas and that any spills are cleaned up immediately. Food is permissible so long as it is neither a distraction nor a mess. If it becomes either of these things, the rules will have to change.
Since you are AP students, I will treat you as mature adults unless you violate this trust. For example, you do not need to raise your hand to ask permission to go to the bathroom, just make a pass (school requirement) and go.
There are a few things that I am particular about when it comes to our time in class. This is not a full year class, we have only have 90 minutes a day for ONE semester. Time is tight. As such, please do not use this time to sleep or work on assignments for other classes. I reserve the right to deduct points from unit exams if you do either of these.
Grading Breakdown: Grades for the Class will be determined as follows:
First Quarter: 50%
Second Quarter: 50%
**The AP test does NOT factor into your grade for the class, it ONLY gives you college credit.**
