In the beginning there was E. Rivers…
In 2012, five young men raised the question, "Is there chess at Sutton?" Although the answer was no, they didn't let that stop them. Having played together for several years with Coach Ben Johnson and Coach Renée Leathers of Smyrna Chess, they weren't ready to let it go.

Working in tandem with a counselor at Sutton, SMS Chess came to life in two parts: the activity club and the competition team. It is not a requirement that club members play as part of the competition team. As a team, SMS Chess has placed and won in many tournaments around the city and at Nationals.

Five years later, three of those original five young men are still playing together. Along with three more dedicated players, they have all worked to keep chess alive in the North Atlanta cluster. As a competition team, the founding members of NA Warrior Chess have been playing together for 4 - 7 years. They also maintain their connection to SMS Chess by playing in tournaments together. The rebirth of this club was made possible by a grant from the North Atlanta High School Foundation.

NA Warrior Chess is a U.S. Chess Federation affiliate and hosts rated chess tournaments throughout the year. Our Faculty sponsors are Media Specialist Ms. Lori McCall and Ms. Kanika Mays.
