The year 1976 is a memorable year for Navchetan Andhjan Mandal. It was in this year that a serious thought was given to the problems and needs of blind people in Kachchh. It was felt to do something positive to help the blind to overcome their plight. Thus Navchetan Andhjan Mandal was established in Kachchh District. The initial phase was a period of growth and "need based approach" was the key to the developmental activities. The development was in a broad perspective i.e. education, social, cultural and economic upliftment. The need to under take developmental activities for the disable was felt all over the country. There was a difference of opinion among the social workers regarding the type of activities to be undertaken in this field. This was so because the requirement of the disabled depends on the geographical area, social and cultural background they come from.

Kachchh is a district of Gujarat State in the western part of India. It is an area of vast arid region of 46 120 km 2. Nearly 74 percent of the total area of the region falls into the category of waste or cultivable wastelands. Kachchh is more or less perennially drought-prone. Population is separated by large areas with no or little developmental activity or human habitation with meager means of communication and transport. Due its vastness and spars population the requirements of the disable in Kachchh vary quite a lot from place to place. Some areas in the Rann of Kachchh are like Black Hole. The residents of these areas are in constant struggle for mere existence.

Navchetan Andhjan Mandal has been established for helping the differently able (disable) persons, especially children from age group 5 yr. to 18 yrs. so that they can help themselves.

In the year 1979 our activities came to light of everyone by establishment of an old age home for fifty people in Shinogra village of Anjar Taluka. The activity was going well till our father figure and president Bhanubhai became seriously ill and could not participate in functioning and day to day activity of the organization. Due to his absence we faced severe economic crisis. But true to the proverb where there is will there is way we developed a good social networking and relationship two true friends. They were Mr. Pranshankar Joshi and Mr. Mansibhai Mexar Chheda of Bhachau Taluka. They not only gave their cooperation in solving the economic crisis but also gave their valuable ideas and thoughts for taking the good work being done ahead. They gave us the idea of shifting our Anjar old age home to Bhachau Taluka and develop appropriate physical infrastructure. With the help from the Government in form of land and benefit of various schemes our Old age home was shifted to Bhachau in.1985.

Inspite of the adverse conditions it did not loose hope and continued the struggle and fight. We believed that there is light of hope after darkness. In this time of distress our trustees and members lacked a savior. Then we saw a ray of light in form of Mr. Bhanukantbhai, owner of Prince Hotel in Bhuj. He acted as a friend, philosopher and guide and was our first President.
