The project “natural soundscapes in a changing world. Preserving the past and building memories for the future ”launched in spring 2012 a challenge for the general public: celebrate biodiversity by recording the sounds of animals in Portugal.
With the various recordings received, a soundscape was built that gradually transports us from an urban to a rural environment until we reach a natural environment, almost devoid of human influence.
We can hear the familiar sounds of the sparrows, the strange sound of the charroco (a falt fish), the contemplatives calls of the whales and even ghostly of the strom-petrels.
There are more than 41 animals species, including birds, amphibians, mammals and insects. The sound were recorded by more than a dozen recordists spread across Portuguese territory and beyond.
These sounds were mixed by Matilde Meireles (invited resident), with the support of Daniel Magalhães and Susana Pereira and under the coordination of Paulo Marques.
Recordists: Bruno Pinto, Catarina Mateus, Caterina Funghi, Cátia Santos, Clara Amorim, Daniel Magalhães, joão Nunes, Julio Neto, Luís Antero, Luís Freitas, Luís Gordinho, Magnus Robb, Matilde Meireles, Madeira Whale Museum, Paulo Marques, Susana Pereira and Tito Alves.
