PREDECESSORS AND SHORT HISTORY: Pungal had been a place of note and importance as it lay between the city of Bikaner and Multan. The Bhatis had acquired it from the Panwars, probably by conquest, and at that time it had 200 villages. Rao Shekha, in the 15th century was in possession of all the western portion of the state when the Rathore invasion from Marwar occurred and whose daughter married Rao Bikaji, leader of the Rathore force and founder of Bikaner. Pungal had grown to 561 villages by 1665, at its conquest by Raja Karan Singh, and at this time it was divided amongst the descendants of the three sons of Rao Shekha, with the descendants of the eldest son, receiving Pungal and 252 villages, while the descendants of second son received Bikampur with 84 villages and Barsalpur with 41 villages, the descendants of the third son received Raimalwali with 184 villages. Rao RANINGDEO, 1st Rao of Pugal before 1392/1413, grandson of Rawal Punpal, Rawal of Jaisalmer; by a strategem pointed out by a Kharal Rajput, he took Marot from the Johyas and Pugal from the Thoris, and made his residence at the latter place; married Rani Sodhiji, and had issue. He died 1413.
Rao Sadul [aka Sadhu], he was his father's Heir; married Rani Karamdevi, died 1406, daughter of Manik Rao, Chief of the Mohil Rajputs. He was killed in battle in 1413.
Rao Tana [aka Tarada], he was granted Bhatner after its conquest in 1417.

Rao KELHAN [aka Kailan], 2nd Rao of Pungal 1414/after 1418, son of Rawal Kehar II, Rawal of Jaisalmer; he took possession of Pungal, Marot, Bikampur and regained Derawar; married 1stly, Rani Mahechaiji, daughter of Rawal Mallinath Rathore (see Jodhpur), married (b), Rani Sodhiji, married (c), Rani Javeda Begum, daughter of Jam Ismail Khan of the Samma family, and had issue, the Raos of Pungal. He died after 1418 aged 62 or 70 years.

He was killed in battle in 1448 at Duniyapur.

Rao BAIRSAL, 4th Rao of Pungal 1448/after 1474, he was made heir to all his father's lands except for Khadal; he constructed the gates and palace at Bikampur and the village of Barsulpur in 1474, married and had issue, four sons. He lived around 1474.

Rao Bagha, he was granted Haspasar with 140 villages around the 1510's, and much later in 1665, of his descendants, the Senior most was granted Raimalwali of 184 villages, while Rao Aaskaran, the head of the Kishanwat sub-clan, kept Rai Malwali.
Rao Khinya, he was granted Barsalpur around the 1510's, and much later in 1665, of his descendants, Hara Khinya sons, Dayal Das was granted Barsalpur of 41 villages, Sur Singh was granted Bikampur of 84 villages.

Rao SUDARSHAN, 15th Rao of Pungal -/1665, he rebelled and after a siege lasting a month, Pungal was taken by Raja Karan Singh of Bikaner in 1665 and was granted to his son; he fled to Lakhbera but was surrendered to Bikaner, and Pungal was reduced to the status of an estate and shared amongst his relatives; married and had issue.

Rao MAHTAB SINGH, 27th Rao of Pungal 1890/1903, born about 1867, son of the Thakur Saheb of Karnisar, a junior branch of the Pungal family, he succeeded by adoption, married Patawat Rathore Rani Mahatab Kanwar, daughter of Thakur Jograj Singh of Chadi, and had issue.
Rao JEORAJ SINGH, 28th Rao of Pungal 1903/1925, born in July 1890 (Savan Sudi 5th, VS 1947), educated at Walter Nobles School, Bikaner and at Mayo College, Ajmer; his estate was raised from 2nd Class to a 1st Class Tazimi estate; he was granted the title of Rao Bahadur by the British Government in 1918, married 1stly, 1905, Rani Bikiji, daughter of the Thakur Saheb of Baie, married 2ndly, 1918, Rani Sahan Kanwar, daughter of Bala Rathore Thakur Ajit Singh of Mokalsar near Siwana, married 3rdly, Rani Suraj Kanwar, died 1925, daughter of Rawatot Thakur Bhairun Singh of Ladnu, and had issue. He died of heart failure in May 1925.

Thakur Kalyan Singh (by Rani Suraj Kanwar), born 30th August 1923, educated at Walter Nobles School, Bikaner and at Mayo College, Ajmer; he was granted the estate of Motigarh; he was briefly a part of the Maharajas personal staff, then later joined the Revenue Department of Bikaner as a Naib Tahsildar, he retired from the post of Deputy Director of Colonisation. He died 20th July 1988.

Rao DEVI SINGH, 29th Rao of Pungal 1925/1984, born in December 1919; educated at Walter Nobles School, Bikaner and at Mayo College, Ajmer; when the estate was released from the Court of Wards, he granted 100 bighas of land to every Bhati family of Bhanipura; married 1stly, 1938, Rani Sugan Kanwar, she died in August 1947, daughter of Rao Mangal Singh Dodiya of Piploda, married 2ndly, Rani Kanchan Kanwar, died 1961, daughter of Thakur Nathu Singh Bidawat of Kanuta, and had issue. He died in November 1984

Rao SAGAT SINGH, 30th Rao of Pungal 1984/-, born 29th March 1939.
Rawal Keher, Rawal of Jaisalmer, married and had issue. Rao Kelan, elder son, married into Rathore family of Mahecha subclan (see Jasol and Barmer) against the wishes of his father, due to which he was expelled/banished and his second son Laxman was made the successor to the throne of Jaisalmer. Thereafter, by virtue of his strength, Kelan established a new thikana Bikampur. His son Chacha became the lord of Pungal. Son of Chacha, was Bairisal, and his son was Shaikha. Langhe (Muslims of Sindh) had animosity with Sheikha, hence, they colluded with his brothers Tiloksi and Jagmal and arrested Sheikha with their assistance and captured Poogal. In those days, Rao Bika had established himself at Jangal Desh. He attacked Muslims and enemy Bhatis and reestablished Sheikha on Pungal. After a few days, Rao Bika of Bikaner went to Pungal and married Rangkunwari, daughter of Rao Sheikha Bhati, and she gave birth to Lunkaran. In B.S. 1535 (1478 A.D.) when Rao Bika decided to constructed a Garh (Fort) on the tank (lake) of Kodamdesar, then the Bhatis of Jaisalmer opposed the same. They also tried to have Rao Sheikha on their side, but he refused.
