Growing up in Miami as a Cuban-American who is also queer has been a journey that has shown me a world of diversity. The vibrant tapestry of cultures that weave through the streets of this city has shaped not only my identity but also my understanding of what it means to be a global learner. Not only that, my experience in Washington D.C. has further enriched my perspective on global learning as being in the heart of the nation's capital exposed me to a myriad of cultures, ideologies, and global issues.Â
Miami, often hailed as a melting pot of cultures, provided me with a unique lens through which to view the world. Growing up in a community where diversity is celebrated and embraced has given me a deep appreciation for different backgrounds and experiences. From the colorful murals adorning the walls of Little Havana to the rhythmic beats of salsa music that echo through the streets, Miami is a constant reminder of the rich tapestry of humanity. However, being both Cuban-American and queer in a society that often struggles with acceptance has presented its own set of challenges. Navigating the intersectionality of my identity has required courage, resilience, and a commitment to authenticity. Yet, it has also fueled my passion for advocacy and social justice. It was through the Global Learning Program at FIU that I truly began to understand the interconnectedness of our world and the importance of using my voice to uplift marginalized communities. The program provided me with the opportunity to immerse myself in diverse cultures, engage with pressing global issues, and challenge my own preconceived perspectives.
Studying law has been a natural progression of my desire to advocate for those whose voices have been silenced or marginalized. My experiences growing up in Miami have underscored the importance of representation and equitable access to justice. As a future lawyer, I am committed to using my platform to amplify the voices of the marginalized and fight for systemic change. For these reasons, the Global Learning Program at FIU has not only broadened my understanding of the world but has also deepened my sense of empathy and compassion. It has taught me that true learning extends beyond the confines of a classroom and requires a willingness to step outside of one's comfort zone. As I continue on my journey as a global learner and future lawyer, I carry with me the lessons learned from my upbringing in Miami: the importance of diversity, the power of resilience, and the necessity of advocating for those who have been marginalized. I am proud to be a product of such a vibrant and diverse community, and I am committed to using my privilege and education to create a more just and equitable world for all.
