In my second year at FIU, I was chosen as the Campus Director for the 2022 cohort of Millenium Fellows. Here, I worked on an engagement project with a group of five other students focused on addressing waste (textile, food, electrical, and plastic) within our campus community. This project is referred to as the Panthers Reducing Waste Initiative.
This was a video submitted to the United Nations Academic Impact team about halfway into our project. If you are interested in learning more about our work this video is a great place to start. In fact, you will hear from each member of the Panther's Reducing Waste Team. In addition, you can also follow us on Instagram at @PantherSustainabilityHub.
This project spanned two full semesters and it would later become the initiative I worked on during my Global Learning Fellowship. Our work during the Millennium Fellowship would result in a partnership between GL and the FIU Department of Sustainability. It was here, that were created an on-campus program referred to as the Panther Sustainability Hub. While the larger group tackled all types of waste, I was focused more on the creation of a university closet. The Hub was located at the Visitor Information Center or VIC at FIU and was operational for about four semesters. While the closet and Hub are no longer in operation, the impact of the program can still be seen today. On estimate, the Panther's Reducing Initiative impacted over 1,000 students and inspired the FreeCycle program seen today.
