the french school

The French school’s name is Saint-Joseph and in the past was built as an abbey in 1850 and was later a hospital. The school, which is private, received its name from the church that is located next to the school. The college is quite big and very old.

The school starts at 8:05 - 8:30 a.m and it finishes at 4:05 p.m.

school Description

There are two big yards in front of the school and behind where they exist a basketball and a badminton court. Students eat inside the school. So there is a cantine where children can eat their lunch (we taste the lunch and it is very delicious!). In the college a lot of and different classrooms exist that they use them for a variety of activities such as:

  • Theatre
  • Hairdressing
  • Computer lab
  • Technology lab
  • Music
  • Art (2 classes)
  • Gym
  • Kitchen
  • Gymnastics

Students have the chance to read books in the library and they can lock their personal items because there are lockers for them.

Some students live far away from the school, so they stay in the dormitory at night (only the days they have school). A washing machine is available.

the chapel

  • What do they use it for?

They use the chapel every month for optional mass, around 30-40 pupils attend it. The rest of the year, it is not used that often, but sometimes they use it for speeches or when the head teacher needs to tell something to the pupils.

  • Why is there a chapel?

The chapel was built when the building was an abbey, but later on it became a school. Not every catholic school has a chapel, but most of them do.

School subjects

They are teaching almost the same subjects which exist in Greece and Greenland.

They also do foreign language such as spanish , english and latin for the older students.

They have only three breaks : two to relax and one to eat lunch (that last 1 hour).

School Function

There are 352 students and 49 teachers at this school.

There is one secretary, for official and a "school life office".

We visited the “school life office” and we interviewed one of the employees, Mr Hendry who gave us useful information.

1. Akrivi: Why does this office exist?

Hendry: It manages all the students and verifies why are not here. It also checks the absents of the students.

2. Akrivi: How many people work at this office?

Hendry: 4-5

3. Akrivi: How does it help the students?

Hendry: It helps in very different ways such as the medicines. Ηere is a small school nurse for children. Also parents call this office to see if their children are okay. In addition to that we help with the homework, especially in the difficult subjects such as History, Mathematics, Geography, etc.

4.Akrivi: Can the students come at this classroom every time they want or does exist a specific working hour?

Hendry: Normally they come here at every break but if they ill they can come every time they want.

punishment

The children who don’t manage to hand in their assignment in time are punished by their teachers. Specifically, during the lunch at the school canteen they are obliged to remain in order to finish their assignment. Additionally, their teacher can give them some extra exercises. One of the girl that we took the interview told us that she was punished for first time. The other girl was punished one more time in the past.

HAIRDRESSING

At St Joseph school, there is also a vocational school. There are classes for students who want to attend lessons in order to become hairdressers, nurses, beautician or just to work in a nursery school. We visited the section of hairdressing. Both rooms are situated in the newly reconstruted part of the building which is very modern. The effectif of 95 students attend lessons 18 hours per week, 12 of them are practise and the other 6 are lessons of Biology, Arts , Communication, History, Aesthetic Physics, French and Mathematics. The students are practising during 7 weeks per week at a hair salon. They usually practice on hair wigs but every Wednesday morning the hairdressing room is open to anyone who wants to have a haircut or a hairstyle. We also wanted to know who funds the reconstruction of hairdressing section as the school is private. We learned that all the money is provided from a part of taxes that pay the hairdressers in the government.
