LASCAUX CAVE

The Lascaux cave is one of the most important caves with Paleolithic wall paintings. The cave is one of the most significant monuments and it was discovered in 1940, while a group of teenagers walked around the town and their dog disappeared underground while chasing a rabbit. The cave we visited was not the original it took 3 years and 30 artists to recreate the original paintings. The original cave is protected because it is a very important monument. We learned that the people who lived in the cave, designed the animals usually with red, yellow and black colours with natural ingredients. The animals they used to design were tauruses and horses. We also learned that some animals were hidden because they believed that it were dangerous (lions, rhinoceurus).

Nowadays it is magnificent how the original cave was reproduced and the visitor can go back in time , thousands of years ago via digital media . It is visited by hundreds of visitors .

We were excited to see the different paintings that were used to decorate the cave’s walls and we found the story of how this cave was discovered quite interesting.

We were happy to learn about the painting techniques of the period and we were also impressed by the similarity of the two caves (the real one and the copy).

With the digital technology we had the opportunity to see life before many years.

The castle of Castelnaud which means new castle was founded in the 12th century. In 1259 the French king handed the castle over to the English. In 1273 it was given back to the owners who rebuilt it.During the war the castle was often in the English camp but in 1442,the French ultimately took it .During the 19th century it was used as a stone quarry. It was finally restored between 1966 and 2012. At present, it is used as a historic monument of Dordogne which also has a medieval museum.

Our visit to Castelnaud

We visited the castle and we learned that it was difficult to attack because it was built in a rock.

We were excited by the expanse of the castle and by the breathtaking view. We were impressed by the medieval cataclysm and by the medieval life
