In Greenland football is one of the most popular sports. Football in Greenland is played with 5 players in each team. They can play football in the summer. They can't play football easily in winter because of the snow and ice. But during their breaks they play football outside school even when it's cold.

inuit games

During the last day of our stay in Greenland we had a chance to observe and to participate in incrediable sport event: the Greenlandic peers presented us the traditional Inuit games. We discovered that these games make part of the Arctic Olympic Games. And we gave it a try!

The name of the first game we tried is "two feet high kick".

The rules are the following: the first player must hold a wire with a seal fur ball and the second player must jump and touch the ball with his feets. Fancy watching the demonstration?

The other two games are played in the following manner:

The first game : a person must stretch out his arms and three people must hold him by the arms and feets then move forward.

Second game : Something very similar with the first game. its called ''one foot high kick''. It's when you jump and kick the fur ball and land with the same foot you used to kick the fur.

A very special greenlandic sport

These pictures are from a school trip. This trip was organised so they could experience the nature. During their trip they were on an excursion in nature. It was purposeful and entertaining.

And while they were there, they went for hunting and they caught a deer, and they said it was exhausting, because they walked for a long time. When they finally saw a deer, one of the teachers(Kaaleeraq) shot the deer. After they caught the deer they splitted it into small pieces using knives so they could carry the deer easier and they carried it to the cabin.

It's really rare to find deers during trips like this, so they were really lucky to catch a deer. So basically the trip counts as sport.

fishing

The Greenlanders love fishing. They go fishing in the summer and in the winter. But in the winter, the northern part in greenland, the ocean is covered in ice so they cant fish in the winter. But in the sommer they can hunt big fish , whales, seals and many more and they fish shrimps in a very great extend . The income they get from shrimps fishing is the highest on a national basis.

Also they use some special equipment like GPS for not losing their orientation and a kind of computer to see how deep the ocean is under their ships.

the harmful consequences of fishing and hunting

Whale hunting

Like many species, the whales of Greenland has suffered from hunting. But it still remains particularly advantageous for hunters because its lard layer is important. The whales provides with a large quantity of meat so this species used to be in great demand. Nowadays it is hunted mostly by the local Inuit population. There are neverthelss certain restrictions concerning the period of hunting and the quantity of hunted species. When a whale is caught and is brought to the local market, all the Nuuk's population gets in line in order to buy it.

Hunting polar bears

In 2006, about 200 to 250 white bears were killed each year since then hunters were advised in Greenland to kill only 10 bears a year, but Greenland Environment Minister Jens Napaattooq had suggested a quotta of 30 bears hunted annually.Tourists will not have the right to shoot bears themselves, but will have to accompany seasoned and selected hunters and bring with them the skins and heads

one day in the swimming hall!!

When we were in Greenland we had the chance to go swimming with our French and Greenladic friends in the swimming Hall of Nuuk. Greenladers love swimming but they can't go swimming due to the low temperatures of the sea , so they use swimming pools instead. The roof of the swimming hall in Nuuk is like the shape of a wave and the Hall is called Malik- which means wave in the Greenlandic language . There is a cafe in the hall. Also, there are two big pools one of which is heated. We had a great time and we will never forget this expierience.
