Fancy listening to Greenlandic language? Thank you, Deborah!

The French and Greek students with their Greenlandic peers

HOLIDAYs PLEASE!!!

Unlike in France, the pupils in Greenlandic schools work from 8 o´clock to 13h30 except for Monday when they work till 15h15.

So our journalist team asked Greenlandic a question: How would you feel if you stayed in school till 4pm as we do in France? This is what they answered:

''I would feel really lazy if we stayed at school till 4pm. But eventually I would get used to it. But it's my opinion, not the others". The others think that it would be boring and some of the other pupils say that they probably would just run away from school.

We also compared our school year, because they have the summer holidays that last for 2 months, the Christmas holidays that last for 2 weeks, Easter that lasts for 1 week and some small holidays here and there. So we asked them: Do you think that you have enough holidays?

''I think that we have enough holidays, maybe a little too much because we also need to learn more, we are lagging behind compared to other schools, so more holidays aren't really that necessary.''

The Greenlandic school is a normal school we can find anywhere in the world. It is located in the center of Nuuk (the capital of Greenland). The Greenlandic school consists of five other buildings which are connected with bridges. Also , the school has a gym,an arts hall, a science lab and a kitchen where the students can eat.

What stroke me most is that they are lucky to have rolling chairs in the classrooms, in contrast with Greece and France. So, we asked our peers: Would you be able to be in the classroom without the rolling chairs?

"I think that it would be less noisy in class, because the pupils go from one table to another with their chairs and talk, and that's annoying because they get really loud and then some pupils get a headache."

If you want to learn more about the school, you are invited to look at the pictures below.

extra-curricular activities at school

The first thing that we thought about asking on such activities, was that: 'What extra-curricular activities do you have at school?'

The Greenlandic fellow pupils answered : "On the last day of school we go to the beach and grill food with the teachers and other pupils."

"During the sports day, there's a tournament with the whole school where we run to the airport and back and run back to the airport and we keep running back and forth... The class that runs the longest distance wins! and they get rewards!"

"And in the 8th grade we went camping!" (see sport section)

As far as learning about their subjects taught at the Greenlandic school, we conclude that they learn Greenlandic, English, Danish, physics, History, Geography, Mathematics, german, Science, Plastic Arts , Physical Education and sports.

During the break we had the chance to play all together.

The school walls look very attractive providing knowledge and experiences. You can also find the logo of our NATA project everywhere! All the doors are colourful and well-decorated...

Don't forget to take your shoes off!

At school you must take off your shoes before entering the classrooms.

With the visit we had in Greenland we noticed something very interesting and at the same time strange. The Greenlandic students and teachers had to take off their shoes when they go to school or they could put a blue bag over their shoes. It the entrance of the school all the shoes are gathered and there are also the blue bags for the shoes. This is happening because the shoes have a lot of microbes and they do not want to have microbes in the school or because there is snow and mud outside and that way they keep their school clean .

One of the most amazing experiences we had during our visit to Greenland was taking part in the practical workshop "Lego Serious Play". Learning through playing - what can be better to discover different cultures, to share the knowledge and to get to know each other!

Eat and run!

The kitchen where anybody can eat his/her lunch... The big and well- equipped gym...
